Julius Caesar Had A Son With Cleopatra
Cleopatra and Caesar first met in 48 BC. when he came to Egypt to track down his rival, the Roman general Pompey. Cleopatra was then at war with her younger brother and co-ruler Ptolemy XIII (according to Egyptian custom, the two formally ruled as husband and wife), and Caesar, who declared himself the executor of their late father’s will, ordered them to come to end the feud.
Ptolemy then ordered his army to prevent Cleopatra from reaching the palace where Caesar was staying, but she smuggled herself in a laundry bag and thus managed to reach the palace. It is believed that Cleopatra and Caesar then began a love affair, and a year later she gave birth to a son, Ptolemy Caesar, who is considered to be Caesar’s son. The Egyptians considered him Caesarion, meaning little Caesar.
Shortly after Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC, Cleopatra’s brother and co-ruler Ptolemy XIV was killed. (The previous co-ruler with whom she was at war, Ptolemy XIII, died around 47 BC) Although it has never been proven, it is suspected that Cleopatra poisoned Ptolemy XIV in order to make Caesarion her co-ruler, which she did in the same year. The new ruler was called Ptolemy XV.
It is not known that Caesar had other children besides his son Caesarion and daughter Julia, who died in childbirth in 54 BC.
