How To Have A Productive Self Talk
We all talk to ourselves. Someone is more and someone less aware of it, but we all do it. But whether there will be benefits or harms depends on the way we do it. Namely, it has been scientifically confirmed that the right words – using our own name instead of the pronoun I in conversation with ourselves – can free us from fears and enable us to be as wise as we are when sharing advice, as we are when, for example, we share it with others.
If you address yourself in first person, there is a high probability that you will be confused in stressful circumstances. If you address yourself by name – your chances of success will increase. Why? Because such an approach – applied in a specific way in specific circumstances – allows the brain to function as best it can. There is also neuroscientific evidence for this in the form of brain scans.
By changing the way we address ourselves – in the first or third person we change the position of the two brain “switches” – in the cerebral cortex, the center of thought, and in the amygdala, the seat of emotions. Depending on what position we put him in (with the help of our own way of speaking) we get closer or further away from the feeling of ourselves and strengthen or decrease the emotional intensity of the comments at our own expense.
Science has only just begun to deal with the topic of talking to oneself. In addition to our own name, there must be other specific words that can help us get higher, faster, farther. That has yet to be explored. But the psychological distance of addressing oneself – as another person – allows for increased self-control and allows us to think more clearly. Our inner voice is formed in early childhood and throughout our lives, it is our faithful companion and mover. It is shaped first by others. Negatively based or negatively directed by parents can become a source of many problems.
Fortunately, what we learned wrong in childhood can be “unlearned” and learned better. By persistently practicing this way of communicating with ourselves, which scientists suggest, we can achieve good results in improving the quality of our lives.
